In Canada there is strong public opinion against landfill, which in some areas has led to a shortage of consented capacity. As in Europe there is a drive to reduce waste going to landfill and strong public opinion against it.
Orgaworld, our business in the Netherlands, identified an opportunity in the Canadian market to offer biological treatment of source segregated organic municipal waste, a market which has significant potential in terms of volumes and to date has few competitors.
We have two operations in Canada, in London, Ontario and Ottawa. Both London and Ottawa plants process almost 100,000 tonnes of organic waste from municipal green bin programmes and distribute 20,000 - 25,000 tonnes of compost to local farmers. At full capacity, both plants combined will process up to 300,000 tonnes of organic waste annually and produce almost 50,000 tonnes of compost.
We are pursuing further opportunities in this market which could lead to investment in additional plants.
