The Netherlands - our largest business - has had some of the most advanced environmental legislation in Europe in place for some time.
They also have high levels of landfill tax (currently circa €107 per tonne). These, together with the geological characteristics of the country, have resulted in a low reliance on landfill with incineration being the predominant final disposal route. The higher cost and limited capacity of final disposal outlets has made sorting and recycling in the Netherlands more viable and the overall the amount of waste sent to landfill is circa 3% – 4%. Overall recycling rates are over 80%.
The primary activities throughout the Netherlands are Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste (and Organic Treatment Processing through Orgaworld.
Our aim in The Netherlands is to grow both the solid and hazardous waste businesses above GDP and expand our organics footprint, which we have done with the opening last year of the Greenmills facility in Amsterdam.
